Maintenance Due Badges

Not liking the maintenance badges anymore. As I thought about it, I started to wonder if anyone would realize that a “!” caution icon would mean that it is time to do some maintenance. I figured probably not. So, I am going to re-do the badge at some point. Perhaps switch it to something more wrench-y to clue folks in that it is a maintenance issue…

Desperately Seeking

If you run RCLogbook on an iPhone 3GS or any iPod Touch with a camera and are interested in helping out with the next beta cycle, please drop me a line. Depending on what goes into the next release, I may need some help testing on these devices at the appropriate time.

Thanks!

Game On!

The first few commits on the new version have happened. No ETA for the release yet, I am still trying to decide what, on the (long) list of things to do, to do. The internal builds now have two new tricks though:

  • When you take a picture of your model within the app the original unedited image is now saved to your camera roll (finally!).
  • Models that have maintenance items due are badged in the lists with a little caution icon.

The badges look like this:

Onward!

Just About Time…

With the new year, it is time to start thinking about what to do for the next release. Real life continues to be busy but I am hoping to squeeze some time in to get a few new features in this quarter. Right now, I am going through feature requests and my “to do” list to build an initial list of target features for the next release.

I have had a number of really good suggestions from RCLogbook users, so keep the ideas coming.

The other big decision is whether this release will be the one that breaks ties with iOS 3 and requires iOS 4 or later. One of the more interesting potential features will need to use some frameworks that are not available in iOS 3 in order to be done the “right” way.

Happy New Year

The holidays made a mess of things this year.

You will be happy to know that 3.7 is in the App Store approval process and should hit the store shortly. For those who have looked at the RCLogbook page, you will see that the documentation and content there has already been updated for 3.7. Any day now.

Things drug out a little longer than expected due to a hectic holiday season. I was hoping to get RCLogbook submitted, got distracted, and then, by the time I got back on track, the App Store developer portal was down for ~2-ish weeks of maintenance. So, I had to wait until right before New Year’s to submit.

But submitted it is. Finally.

The Final Stretch

The beta is mostly wrapped up. Waiting for some final feedback and then we should be ready to submit. Target right now is to get the submission done this coming Sunday which would get the new release out in the App Store sometime in early December, depending on how long Apple’s review queue is these days.

Propellers

One of the other new features coming in 3.7 is the ability to associated propellers with events for those of us using such things. This is handled in a fashion similar to locations, where there is a global list of possible propellers that can then be associated with a model or event.

Progress Update

Beta 1 is wrapping up. There were a few tweaks to fix a bug or two and tweak some behavior, but so far, it is looking good. The Beta 2 release will be going out this weekend for further abuse. Right now, the target is to get the app submitted within a week or two.

Things got a bit delayed by a serious system crash that forced me to have to reformat my drive and rebuild my system. All I can say is thanks be to Apple for Time Machine. While it took a day to re-install Lion, the developer tools, and restore from the Time Machine backup, it was otherwise painless and I managed to avoid loosing any data.

Remember to backup regularly!

On Being Retired

One of the new user-suggested features in 3.7.0 is the ability to “retire” models and batteries. This allows you to keep the data around for models or batteries that you are no longer actively using while taking the retired models or batteries out of the mainline UI.

Wh00t!

Well, we are code complete. The last non-bug-fix check-in was done this morning. Between football games this afternoon, we polished off a couple of bugs and issues. Since we managed to get a bit more done than originally expected or planned, we decided to go with 3.7 for the version number. We will now go through several rounds of testing and are shooting to submit the final binary to the App Store in early December.

We are still looking for a few good beta testers, so drop us an email if you are interested.

The feature list can be found after the jump…
